On this day in 1944, Lou Reed was born. This statesman of rock is a pioneer of guitar effects including, distortion, feedback, and innovative tunings. He was the main songwriter, guitarist and vocalist for the Velvet Underground. His solo career began in 1971 and continues today spanning decades. Here is a clip of a recent performance with his back up band Metallica at the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show.

Doug Yule turns 63 today.  He is most famous for his years as bassist in The Velvet Underground during the years 1968 – 1973.  He replaced John Cale.  Besides playing bass for the band, Yule played the organ and eventually did vocals, he is most known for the famous Velvet Underground song, Candy Says. Once Doug Yule left the band in 1973, the band name Velvet Underground, was retired.   In December 2009, Doug Yule, Lou Reed, and Maureen Tucker reunited to celebrate the release of The Velvet Underground – New York Art, the book contained photographs of their first performances in NYC, it was a sold out event.  Check out Doug Yule singing his most noteable song, Candy Says.
