In the 1970’s, David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Tina Weymouth all met at Rhode Island School of Design. After forming a band together in 1974, they made their way to New York City, specifically to the Lower East Side. They wanted a band name that was unique and would separate them from cliché bands, Talking Heads was made. After months of rehearsals, the band’s first live performance was held at CBGB. Psycho Killer, First Week, Last Week/Carefree, and Artists Only were the band’s first set of demos.
They signed with Sire Records and released their first single Love Goes To Building On Fire/New Feeling. David, Chris, and Tina were recommended to have a fourth member and Jerry Harrison joined the band in 1976. Talking Heads stood out from other bands because their sound was gentle, full of charm, and they hit it hard with their lyrics. Within four years the band released four albums – Talking Heads: 77, More Songs About Buildings and Food, Fear of Music, and Remain in Light. They made a great return in 1983, with their single Burning Down The House. This was the band’s first and only Top 10 Hit in America. The band released three more albums, but friction was growing and they announced they were breaking up in 1991. David Byrne continued with a solo career while Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth created the Tom Tom Club.
On March 18, 2002, the band was inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame where they reunited to perform their classic hits.
