“To confine one’s artistic life to three or four years, well, it’s the same as those people who say, “Oh, after 1978 CBGB was all over.”  Well it certainly wasn’t!  For me it just went through a lot of different things, from the hardcore scene of the 1980′s to the Sonic Youth scene and the sleaze-rock scene with Speedball Baby and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Pussy Galore, through when it became a true American rock club in the last ten years …”

Patti Smith, the “Godmother of Punk,” made her musical debut with the album Horses, incorporating poetry and rock into her music. In 1974, Patti Smith began performing with guitarist Lenny Kaye. Ivan Kral, Jay Dee Daugherty, and Richard Sohl would complete the full band lineup. Their first single Hey Joe/Piss Factory was released. The band would become known as the Patti Smith Group and they were signed by Clive Davis at Arista Records.

Patti Smith co-wrote Because the Night with Bruce Springsteen, which appeared on Patti Smith Group’s most commercially successful album Easter. Patti Smith took a break from music for most of the 80s and left New York. Her comeback was in 1988, with her album Dream of Life. In the 1990’s, Patti Smith collaborated with close friend and well-known vocalist Michael Stipe of R.E.M. on E-Bow the Letter, featured on R.E.M.’s album New Adventures in Hi-Fi. She then released two albums Peace and Noise and Gung Ho. On March 12, 2007, Patti Smith was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. She dedicated her award to the memory of her late husband Fred Smith and performed The Rolling Stone’s classic Gimmie Shelter.

On October 15, 2006, Patti Smith played a 3 ½ hour set as the last performance at CBGB 315 Bowery.
